NATURAL BRIDGE - Historians aren’t precisely sure who built Stonehenge or why, but this much is certain about the ancient monument constructed perhaps 5,000 years ago in the English countryside: Maneuvering those giant stones into place was quite an engineering feat.
Foamhenge is less of a mystery. The lightweight reproduction in Rockbridge County was constructed of, yes, beaded foam by artist/entertainer/genuine-piece-of-work Mark Cline and a few employees as an April Fools’ Day stunt in 2004. It took them about six weeks to do what it took the builders of Stonehenge about 1,500 years. (He also built a second Foamhenge for a private client in Alabama, so take that, Neolithic people!)
Foamhenge has lasted far longer than he anticipated and attracted more attention than he could have dreamed, but its days on a hillside just north of Natural Bridge on U.S. 11 are numbered. see less
